October 14 — But Deliver Us from Evil Matthew 6:13
“And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.”
Matthew 6:13 Sound Devotional
Reflection
When Jesus Christ taught us to pray this way, He was not teaching fear—He was teaching authority.
“Deliver us” is not a timid whisper. It is a covenant appeal. It acknowledges that evil is real, but it also declares that evil is not sovereign.
The word translated “evil” can mean evil in general—or the evil one. This prayer recognizes that we are in a spiritual conflict, yet we are not defenseless. We are sons and daughters asking our Father to intervene, to rescue, to shield, to pull us out of snares seen and unseen.
This phrase is a battle cry for this hour.
There are subtle evils: Bitterness that hides in disappointment. Pride masked as discernment. Fear disguised as wisdom. Compromise dressed as compassion.
And there are overt evils: Injustice. Violence. Deception.Accusation.
When we pray, “Deliver us from evil,” we are declaring:
Break every hidden snare. Expose every scheme. Rescue us from what seeks to corrupt our hearts. Guard our families, our land, and our callings.
Deliverance is not only about crisis—it is about preservation. It is about being kept from internal corruption as much as external attack.
The Father delights in deliverance. Throughout Scripture, He reveals Himself as Rescuer—bringing Israel out of bondage, shutting lions’ mouths, parting seas, overturning graves. His nature is to save.
This prayer also aligns us with victory already secured. Evil may roar, but it does not reign. Darkness may threaten, but it does not triumph. Deliverance flows from the finished work of Christ.
Sometimes deliverance looks dramatic. Sometimes it looks like quiet restraint—grace that holds your tongue, wisdom that redirects your path, peace that disarms panic. Not all rescue is loud.
Today, declare over your life:
• I will not be ensnared.
• I will not be devoured.
• I will not be corrupted.
• I am guarded by the Lord.
The One who teaches us to pray this prayer is faithful to answer it.
